Akshay Venkatesh is an Australian mathematician and the Robert and Luisa Fernholz Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Born in New Delhi in 1981 and raised in Perth, Australia, he was a celebrated child prodigy: he completed high school at 13, earned a B.Sc. at the University of Western Australia around 16, and represented Australia at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1994, winning a Bronze medal. He took his PhD at Princeton in 2002 under Peter Sarnak, held a C. L. E. Moore instructorship at MIT and a faculty post at NYU's Courant Institute, and was a professor at Stanford from 2008 to 2018. In 2018 he was awarded the Fields Medal, mathematics' highest honor, for work fusing number theory with homotopy theory, representation theory and dynamics. His recent research examines new algebraic structures related to the topology of locally symmetric spaces. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a MacArthur Fellow, and won the Infosys Prize (2016), Ostrowski Prize (2017), SASTRA Ramanujan Prize (2008) and Salem Prize (2007).
