Gilles Van Assche is a Belgian cryptographer and co-designer of the Keccak hash function, which NIST selected as SHA-3 in October 2012. He works at STMicroelectronics in Diegem, Belgium, in the Secure Microcontrollers Division, and teaches cryptography at the Ecole Superieure d'Informatique in Brussels. He earned a Physics Engineer degree from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in 1998 and a PhD in quantum cryptography there in 2005, then published Quantum Cryptography and Secret-Key Distillation with Cambridge University Press. In 1992, as a Belgian high-school student, he competed at the International Olympiad in Informatics in Bonn, winning a bronze medal (rank 81-83, 125/200).
