Jiří Votava represented Czechoslovakia at the first International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Brașov, Romania, in 1959. Then 17 years old, he scored 28 points (69.2%), placing joint 17th of the 52 contestants and earning an honourable mention. He was one of six members of the Czechoslovak team, which finished 3rd of seven countries overall. At the time of the competition he was a secondary-school pupil in Prague (listed as attending a school in Prague 12, W. Piecka Street). There is no reliable public record of his later career.
