Thomas Chen is a PhD student in Biostatistics at the University of Cambridge, based in the MRC Biostatistics Unit's Causal Mechanisms programme. He was born/raised in The Hague, Netherlands, and won a bronze medal for the Netherlands at the 2018 International Mathematical Olympiad (Cluj-Napoca) as a pupil at Gymnasium Haganum, after taking silver at the 2018 Benelux Mathematical Olympiad. He went on to read Mathematics and Linguistics at Universiteit Leiden (BSc), writing his 2021 bachelor thesis on 'The Leech lattice: Sphere packings and the Conway groups', then completed a Master's in Mathematical Statistics at Cambridge before starting his PhD. He also competed at IMC 2022 for Leiden and served as Freshers' Officer on the Downing College MCR committee.
