# Turns out athletes on Reddit read the comments too

Researched with Autumn (https://www.autumn.ai) from public sources. Updated 2026-11-07. Interactive version: https://www.autumn.ai/resources/athletes-on-reddit

We read through 39,142 posts and comments from 93 athletes' Reddit accounts. Plenty showed up for one AMA and left. Others stuck around for years, correcting highlight threads about themselves, arguing about their own races and handing out training advice like any other regular.

231 real posts and replies from 93 athletes' Reddit accounts, from Roger Federer to Sachin Tendulkar, quoted exactly and linked.

The companion game, "Which athlete wrote this?": https://www.autumn.ai/resources/athletes-on-reddit/guess

## Six things we noticed

### They read the threads about themselves

Post a clip of a pro on Reddit and there's a decent chance the pro shows up in the comments, usually to explain what actually happened.

- Joe Lauzon (u/JoeLauzonDotCom) in r/sports: https://www.reddit.com/r/sports/comments/4zp0w3/comment/d6xp5je/
- Imogen Grant (u/imogendaisy) in r/interestingasfuck: https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/1enyqye/comment/lhaw7xb/

### A lot of one-day AMAs

Most of them showed up for one AMA and never really came back. The answers are better than you'd expect.

- Shaquille O'Neal (u/MrShaquilleONeal) in r/IAmA: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1yzo2a/comment/cfp7hkf/
- Roger Federer (u/iamrogerfederer) in r/IAmA: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1ezafj/comment/ca595kt/

### The ones who stayed

21 of them have posted across five years or more. NASCAR drivers in particular basically live in r/NASCAR.

- Chase Briscoe (u/C_Briscoe) in r/NASCAR: https://www.reddit.com/r/NASCAR/comments/nglnqm/comment/gyrt818/
- Tony Hawk (u/tonyskates) in r/OldSkaters: https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSkaters/comments/1k598ha/skated_with_bam_yesterday_56yo_x_45yo/

### Sometimes they talk to each other

Teammates vouch for each other in AMAs, and one cricket legend turned up in a World Cup winner's thread.

- Sachin Tendulkar (u/sachintendulkar) in r/IndiaCricket: https://www.reddit.com/r/IndiaCricket/comments/1qkks9i/comment/o17zwch/
- Sneh Rana (u/Sneh_Rana) in r/IndiaCricket: https://www.reddit.com/r/IndiaCricket/comments/1qkks9i/comment/o180r3u/

### Off the field, they're nerds like everyone else

Balatro, anime, Game of Thrones, Swiss cheese. Away from their own sport they post like regular fans.

- Daigo Umehara (u/DaigoAMA) in r/IAmA: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2frvdb/comment/ckc6zi6/
- Hungrybox (u/iamhungrybox) in r/balatro: https://www.reddit.com/r/balatro/comments/1p58foo/i_played_balatro_on_a_67foot_screen_in_times/

### Free coaching

Ask a world champion how to train and some of them will just tell you, at length.

- Evander Holyfield (u/EvanderTheRealDeal) in r/Boxing: https://www.reddit.com/r/Boxing/comments/k8kovn/comment/gf2qoty/
- Jolanda Neff (u/jolandaneff) in r/TrekBikes: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrekBikes/comments/fygf3x/comment/fmzx2r5/

Replying to a redditor:

> Have you ever been to a volcano when its erupting?

> We were on tour with the Grateful Dead in Oregon. They were playing the show and they start playing Fire on the Mountain. The volcano next door, Mt. Helens, blows up. When the show was over a bunch of us raced to the airport and boarded a plane. We told people at the airport we were scientists studying atmospheric conditions and the effect of smoke and volcanic explosions on the human spirit, so the pilot was terrified, but we convinced him to fly right into the smoking crater with fire and lava everywhere. He wanted to go home but we were on a scientific mission and we kept getting closer and closer. As we were flying around inside the erupting volcano, the military jets scrambled from the local base and come up there to get us out of there. It was a real dogfight but we had the spirit of Cortez on our side. We eventually left and when we landed at the airport the pilot was most relieved as we quickly fled and went back to the rest of the tour.

> i played a lot of league of legends before i got DOTA2 invite . I can tell you a funny story :) I think i was doing very good . I played around 1800-2000 overall games of it . I wanted to get to top1 and write on forums of LOL that "this game is too easy and if you want something challenging or competetive you should play dota" . But :D sadly i got only to top8 MAX i think .. in solo QUE .Then i stopped due to DOTA . And i was playing alone mostly . So people in DUO had more opportunity to get top1 . At first i liked the game , but then slowly after playing it more and more i start realising of how "small chess field" it have compare to dota. How small "opportunities" it give to you at creativity. But it was long ago . PLEASE do not use it anywhere , because it's only my opinion . And it was long ago , since then a lot of things changed. I think League of Legends gave me a lot in dota . A lot patience actually :D because without it you can do nothing there . Also i think that SOLO que is very stupid idea in league of legends , because it's very very teamdepended game . I don't follow league of legends now , sometime i watch tournament games . I think this game improved a lot from the point i left it . But i will allways choose dota . I have nothing against league of legends . I just feel it more casual on medium lvl . Also i believe in higest lvl it is also very hard to play .

### **Marius Bakken** (u/MariusBakken) in r/NorwegianSinglesRun, Sep 19, 2025 · Advice

Replying to the post "Why are my easy runs so slow?".

> The effect of running the easy runs between 70-80% of max HR vs. below 70%, like I generally recommend (and still do), is a matter again of cost/benefit. The effect on muscle tone, running economy and recovery is sufficient at below 70%, but going above this, most will start having more muscular wear. That will influence recovery and the next harder session. MOST runners will be MOST of the time be in a negative muscular state in terms of recovery and tone after a harder session - even sub-threshold. So you really have to play the recovery days smart. Are there exceptions ? Yes, of course, but usually staying below 70 generally keeps it safe.

People always make a big point about short quarterbacks having a hard time seeing over the line, but if you have a 6'4 quarterback and a 6'5 lineman, he can't see over it either, so you find ways to throw in-between lanes. You gotta find passing lines as far as stepping up and moving the pocket, but height has never hindered me as far as seeing down the field. And I'm not the shortest quarterback in the league.

> Good question! I'd take out the downward elbows rule. It's not necessary as long as the legal striking areas are clear and enforced. Any strikes to the back of the head and spine are dangerous and this is where the downward elbow is most effective, particularly during takedown defense against the fence. It's no more dangerous than any other elbow in another position though.

Replying to a redditor:

> Do they really call climber's poo "Mud Falcons"? Any other cool terminology you'd care to share?

> Well, I don't know about this "mud falcon," I've never heard that one.
>
> We have a lot of terminology that's pretty funny.
>
> I used to call what we'd bring up on a big wall like El Capitan a "poop tube." It's just a - kind of like a gigantic PVC pipe that you would fill with a bag that you pooped in, and then you closed it up so you wouldn't have to smell it while you're on the wall.
>
> Let me go back and explain one thing: on El Capitan, a 3,000 foot wall, most people don't do it in one day. It takes several days. There are camps where there are ledges, or if there are no ledges, you bring a "porta-ledge." Or a hammock, back in the day. Anyway, obviously you're going to have to use the facilities at some point on a several day climb.
>
> SO instead of just leaning out on a wall and pooping into the air, where you might actually be dropping onto somebody below you (which might explain "mud falcons") - actually when i was trying to free-climb the nose for the first time, I was sleeping on Camp 4, and somebody was on Camp 5, which is directly overhead, and I woke up with some kind of messy stool on my sleeping bag...
>
> Maybe you shouldn't tell this story.
>
> Anyways, we are responsible for our excrement and trash, so we carry everything with us. And so for that purpose, you can bring a plastic bucket so you don't have to smell it like I said before. But you need to contain that stuff so it doesn't smell, and you're not leaving it on the wall or dropping it down onto other people.
>
> Well, there's a lot of technique terms.
>
> One of the terms that we use to describe a hand position was named after Gaston Rébuffat. And so in a book that he published many years ago, he showed this position of his hand with the thumbs *down,* so it's kind of like an inverted grip. Normally when you grab something your hand is facing thumb-up, but sometimes on the rock there are times when you want your thumbs down, like on a vertical-shaped hold for example.
>
> And then there's techniques called "the flag" - that's when you drop your foot down underneath you, you're not really using your foot on the rock, you're using your leg as a counterbalance. So it's for balance. You just swing your leg under, and it's called a flag. And I'm actually working on a video and it's going to explain all the different techniques and the process of how you plan a sequence of moves on the rocks.
>
> So hopefully that will be out in the next year. So a lot of these terms will be documented in a way so that people have access to a source. Because right now our climbing lingo is - it's very difficult to show all the different techniques without showing in video, so I'm working on that. It's taking quite a few years.
>
> So there's a lot of little terms that people say like "Grab that tweaker" or "Dime-edge" - an edge so thin, it's the width of a dime - you can use all kinds of words to describe the features.
>
> A "nubbin" would be a little tiny feature, a tiny crystal maybe, that just sticks out from a rock face.

The top 7 players of the history of basketball in chronological order are Bill Russell, Wilt, Oscar, Kareem, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan. I have no problem with you disagreeing with what I say, but please make sure it's what I say, not what you think I said. When everybody thinks alike, nobody thinks. You need endurance, strength, power, quickness and only 15 minutes between each run that can last up to 2 minutes for a recovery. We average about 6-8 runs on race day. That doesn't take into account training day on the course as well as time trials day. Those few days can be rigorous and the next weekend you have to do it all over again. Shadowboxing, punching a bag with someone keeping a count, if you're practicing and you get tired and get accustomed to getting tired, you're gonna be great. Boxing, you're gonna get tired. > I think everyone knows which one that is. It will be the five one and the fifth goal against Germany in the 5-1 win significant game because it was Eriksson’s first competitive game. It was the return leg or the second leg of our qualifiers against them where we lost the first one in the last game at the old Wembley against Germany. I think they hadn't lost in fifty-plus competitive games at home. And then we went one nil down and then to come back and win five one. >
> However, this is quite literally the only mention Smash has in the entire awards show. Smash at all. So it's a big deal that one of those five spots went to a Smasher considering the HUNDREDS of other top players in other top games.
>
> The one reason above all that I'm asking people to vote is EXPOSURE. I have nothing personal to gain from the award apart from a cool trophy and a few minutes to speak some worlds. However, if I win I am planning on making my speech not about me or some dumb Jigglypuff stuff.
>
> I want to talk about us. The community. The grassroots efforts. The fact that we are one of the highest watched esports in the world with no major company backing. It would be Michael Phelps handing an award to a Smash player rather than a League player or a Counter Strike player.

> Do the other nominees have accomplishments that best mine? Sure, that's debatable and probably true. For those people who truly don't like me or what I do and want to vote for other people: I get it. Trust me, I do. But if I ask you to put that aside for one tweet, there's a very realistic shot that Smash Bros could be recognized on a scale it never really has before. If you're not voting for me, then vote for Smash. That's what this award is actually about.
>

Illustrated in my book, "Geronimo: Leadership Strategies of an American Warrior," they prepared for situations like this and were raised to respond to them starting as children. ### **Matt Barkley** (u/M_A_T_T_H_E_W) in r/nfl, May 5, 2015 · Advice

In the thread "Question: Is it a difficult transition for a college quarterback to go from college sized balls to NFL sized balls?".

> I may be a little late to this party, but I'll add my two cents from my experience of dealing with both Nike and Wilson footballs.
>
> First off, there is no better football than "The Duke" that Wilson makes for the NFL. Both the leather quality and the shape (not size) make a remarkable difference, for me at least. The Wilson just fits in your hand better and has a much more natural feel. Now let me backtrack to college.
>
> At USC my first two years I used the Nike 3005 'small girth' ball. As you can guess, yes, there is a 'large girth' version which I ended up switching to my junior and senior year. From my experience with these two, despite what I just read about official ball sizes, there is a clear difference in the ball size and how it feels in your hand. Now this noticeable size difference is primarily located toward the nose end of the ball. And IMO, that's the biggest difference between college balls and the NFL ball. College footballs tend to be more narrow toward the nose (between stripes and nose), while the NFL ball feels a bit thicker at that location. I believe this is the reason why the NFL ball spins better and feels more natural when you're holding it.
>
> Allllll that to say, probably the biggest difference in how a ball spins/feels is how it is prepared. Some teams use Mississippi mud, others wet them down and rub them with towels, I've even heard of equipment managers throwing balls into the dryer. So it's all personal preference at that point, but from my experience, I couldn't wait to throw the NFL ball.
>
> TLDR; There is a difference in college and NFL balls, and although the NFL ball 'feels' bigger, it also feels more natural in your hand.
