Replying to a redditor:

> how did you develop the idea for the powder mage concept? is it based on things you read? ideas you always fancied seeing played out? also how strict is your writing? do you go from a well developed skeleton to write story around? or do you kinda let it unfold as you write it…

> It developed over a few months, if I remember right. I originally wanted to do something with Tommy Guns and sorcerers robbing banks, John Dillinger style. Then I saw Sharpe's Rifles and thought it would make a fantastic setting for an epic fantasy novel. My wife and I brainstormed the types of magic one would find in that kind of world and that's what we came up with!
