# Turns out authors and game devs on Reddit actually read the comments

Researched with Autumn (https://www.autumn.ai) from public sources. Updated 2026-11-07. Interactive version: https://www.autumn.ai/resources/creators-on-reddit

We read through 84,706 posts and comments from 68 creators' Reddit accounts. Some came for one AMA. A lot of them hang around their own fan subreddits, answering lore questions, owning up to bugs and typos, and telling people about the stuff that got cut.

208 real Reddit replies from 68 authors, game developers, YouTubers and artists: lore answers, cut ideas and their own mistakes.

The companion game, "Can you tell which creator wrote this?": https://www.autumn.ai/resources/creators-on-reddit/guess

## Five things we noticed

### Answering the lore questions

Fans ask what's canon. Every so often the person who made it shows up and just tells them.

- Eric Barone (u/ConcernedApe) in r/AndroidGaming: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidGaming/comments/b289du/comment/eiraao7/
- Ari Gibson (u/Ari_TeamCherry) in r/gaming: https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/6rvds8/comment/dl83dzk/

### The ideas that didn't make it

Procedural mines, a dream level in every bug's head, an ending where everyone on the roof dies. Most cuts happen quietly; these got told.

- Eric Barone (u/ConcernedApe) in r/AndroidGaming: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidGaming/comments/b289du/comment/eiqyxu7/
- V. E. Schwab (u/veschwab) in r/Fantasy: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/60hbms/comment/df6njsi/

### Owning the mistake

A reader finds the bug, the typo or the bad chemistry, and the person who made it just says yep, that's on me.

### When fans send stuff

Tree stumps, troll dolls and a full Emma Frost costume. They remember.

> So originally (as in the very, very early days of drafting), VICIOUS was about a different character entirely, an EO--ExtraOrdinary--who moves to a city and has two different gangs try to recruit him, the Heroes and the Villains (one led by Eli and the other by Victor). In this version, the characters on both sides had more comic book superhero/villain names, and Victor's--before he even had a real name--was VICIOUS. From there, I backed up and got Vic. And from there, Victor. The original story went away, but his name stuck.

>
> A Double-Double has a quarter pound (pre-cook mass) of meat. That's 113g of meat. Plus another 50g or so of other imported material for the bun, sauce, etc. Plus the cost of the business itself. So that's about 160 slugs. There are 6 slugs to the (2015) dollar. So that means it's about $26.60 in shipping costs. That, plus the $3.50 it costs in the real world means getting an in-n-out burger in Artemis would cost you about $30 in today's money.

> Hey! Thanks for doing an AMA. What do you think the trick is for making imaginary cities feel tangible and solid?

> For example, the reason the Brooklyn Dodgers are called that is because back at the turn of the century, the city started using electrified trolleys, which moved far, far faster than the horse drawn trolleys. Citizens simply could not conceive of a vehicle moving at 20 miles an hour. They didn't have the societal programming built in to make them aware. So pedestrians died by the dozens, crushed by electrified trolleys hurtling through the streets. So when Brooklyn got a baseball team, they called them the Trolley Dodgers, and eventually lost the trolley part.

> The easiest was probably the main theme ("Nascence"). I wrote it the day I first spoke with Jenova, days after Flower came out. We met at the Sony Santa Monica office and he told me what he was looking for and by the time I had walked to my car in the lot, I heard it in mind completely. Very rarely is it so clear.

> It developed over a few months, if I remember right. I originally wanted to do something with Tommy Guns and sorcerers robbing banks, John Dillinger style. Then I saw Sharpe's Rifles and thought it would make a fantastic setting for an epic fantasy novel. We'd never get him out of that funk and get him thinking about how to have his own future (AKA: be tempted to stay with Amanda). But Jennifer Connolly (AKA JCon) advocated hard for it. Yes, its a great scene. But the reason this is the best note is because it forced JBZ (writer/producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry) and I to figure out how to solve the problems this scene created. So much of their journey (the hotel, the dance scene, Amanda seeing a version of herself with a kid) all came from us trying to solve the issues Plague World created. > At this point in your career, is there a story you want to tell but feel you need to level up as a writer to be able to do it right?

> I'm always telling the story that I'm not talented enough to write. I feel this way all the time with the Mirror Empire books, wishing I'd waited ten years to write them cause then I could write them CORRECTLY. But the thing is if you do that, you'll never finish anything, because you're always waiting until you're better, but how do you get better? By writing. So I am always writing the book that I feel I'm not quite good enough to write. The hope is that by the END of the book, the process of writing the book has leveled you up enough that at least you can edit it into a book that's good enough to pass muster.
