Autumn AIAfter YC · a census
11,220 founders tracked

Where founders go
when they leave.

We traced all 11,220 people who ever founded a Y Combinator company, across twenty years of batches, to where they work today. 6,392 of them, 57%, are still at the company they started. Another 3,256 work somewhere new, and for roughly one in eight we couldn't find a current role at all. Of the movers, 116 are at startups still in stealth. That beats OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic, and Google. Everyone else spread across 2,394 employers, 87% of which got exactly one.

the half-life of a YC founder

Most founders from 2018 or later are still running the company they started. Go one batch year older and most have moved on. It takes about 8 years for half of a class to leave.

Almost nobody quits in year one. Ten years out, about a third are left. Twenty years out, almost none. Every batch slides down the same curve.

Denominator: founders whose current employment is readable (9,737 of 11,220). First batch year per founder; still = at a company they founded, including through its acquisition.

The two-year cliff

24 months
median stay after an acquihire

After an acquihire, 70% of founders join the buyer. Half of them are gone within 24 months, right as the standard two-year vest clears. They stay exactly as long as the paperwork makes them.

A full acquisition works the other way. Only 38% of founders join, but the ones who do stay a median of 37 months, more than a year longer.

Kaplan-Meier survival on founders who joined the acquirer; still-employed founders right-censored. Asset deals (30 founders, 23% join) too thin to chart.

They start again

21%
refound within a year of a shutdown

A year after a shutdown, 20.5% of founders have already started something new. A year after an acquisition, only 11.4% have. Most of the rest are still vesting at the buyer.

Founders whose companies died either go again quickly or not at all. Acquired founders start slow and keep founding well past the two-year mark, once the vest stops holding them.

Clock starts at the founder's own departure where readable, else the company's end. By year five: 34.9% (shutdown) vs 28.6% (acquired).
