> Serious question: (and this is my opinion, of course) you guys are know for reading vocal, passionate, or rude user feedback and responding with long form emoji laden responses that tend to further inflame those responses of late. I know you have an internal style guide…

> Thanks for reaching out with an incredibly interesting question. 🤗
>
> I’m certainly the chief long-form emoji-laden author here. 😂 I really enjoyed seeing the way you framed your question and customer support is near and dear to my heart so I’m happy you asked.
>
> First and foremost, 1Password exists today because of our customers. That’s true in many ways but the important bit for this conversation is word-of-mouth marketing. I think it’s fair to say that /u/roustem suck at marketing and if it wasn’t for our customers talking about us and recommending 1Password to their friends we wouldn’t have had the customers needed to make this our full time gig.
>
> What we found most effective to spur word of mouth was great customer support. By answering people quickly, with relevant information, and enough flair to build a connection, we found people were more than excited to go tell their friends. And not only that, we learned what customers needed so we could make 1Password better.
>
> Interestingly enough, that’s exactly how 1Password for Business came to be. We heard from many customers who had been using 1Password for years in their personal lives and then telling us they wanted to use it at their work.
>
> As we expanded the company (feels odd to say that as at the time we were going from 2 to 10 while nowadays we’re at 500) we needed to instil this approach into the new folks joining us. We had some guides and such and the main message there was to “kill ‘em with kindness” and yeah, that’s my name which shows you how great I am at marketing. 😂
>
> Anyways as we continued to grow and the questions got more and more diverse we codified a lot of the flows, which could be called an “internal style guide” as you named it. Here’s a screenshot of the homepage of our spell book (think Hogwarts):
>
> https://dsc.cloud/28e490/pb-SXNql8uqEL-VMgyxgJtkCes.png
>
> And here’s a screenshot of one of the guides that walks through one of the more controversial situations as I think in ties into your question about handling users that are not happy and who we might not be able to win over:

>
> In that particular this article tries to teach our folks about standalone vaults and our approach for helping them. It then has a set of sample emails and responses, and sample responses to responses. As you might imagine in the case of people having troubles syncing their standalone vaults our recommendation is to move over to a membership where everything is taken care of for them.
>
> Certainly a controversial path for some but for the most part people just want their app to work and have their data everywhere they go and are happy to make the transition.
>
> Now to your point not everybody will be happy there and can what do we do then? We could certainly say “don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out” but we don’t. Instead we try our best to listen and see if we can find ways to help users. To see if we can build a connection or some common ground that will give us a safe place to build a relationship before proceeding to tackle the contentious issue that has them upset.
>
> At the end of the day people love 1Password and they react vehemently when they worry we might break their workflows or go in a direction they don’t like. With all the passion things can be said that are hurtful or rude as you say, and it’s human nature to want to fight fire with fire, but we’re professionals and in the fire fighting business professionals use water. Part of the long-form emoji-laden responses are an attempt to find a way to around the fire, build a connection, and add some humanity to the situation.
>
> And as for emojis specifically, they’re awesome. 😍 I love how they bring some colour and levity to the world. And I especially love the approach Reddit uses with their Awards and hope something like that gets codified into Unicode someday. 🙏🏻
>
> I hope that helps explain a bit about how we handle things behind the scenes and give some context to our approach.
>
> Take care and stay safe. ❤️

> Why did you abandon the share sheet? You have completely alienated all of your standalone vault users without any prior warning and with having previously stated that, while moving forward you would not support them, you would allow users to continue using them in the older…

> I'm sorry we pissed you off, Nixon506E. It certainly wasn't our intent. 💙
>
> In all honesty I haven't used the share sheet in years and the same can be said for most of our team. The share sheet was cutting edge technology when Apple introduced it in iOS 8 and at the time it was the only way we had to fill in Safari and other webviews. But it was limited in what it could do and when Apple introduced Password Autofill in iOS 12 we jumped on it and never looked back.
>
> Before going on I’d like to highlight exactly what functionality is available and what is no longer available for standalone vault users specifically.
>
> With [Password Autofill](https://support.1password.com/ios-autofill/) you can fill usernames & passwords for logins, including having the current TOTP value copied to your clipboard for extra convenience on sites with 2FA enabled. You can also save and create logins within 1Password.
>
> Password Autofill is super convenient as iOS highlights it right above the keyboard for easy discovery and activation. Now as good as Password Autofill is there were a few things that the API didn’t empower us to do, namely:
>
> * Fill sign-in forms with more than 2 fields
> * Fill credit cards
> * Fill addresses from identities
>
> Overall it was a great trade and we could have retired the share action when Password Autofill came available in iOS 12 but it wasn’t hurting anything and wasn’t in the way so we left it.
>
> We did however stop maintaining it as it was becoming quite long in the tooth. Custom share actions were added by Apple way back in 2014 and support for the action extension was introduced in iOS 8. The first commit to our open sourced [app extension repo](https://github.com/AgileBits/onepassword-app-extension) was on [July 20th, 2014](https://github.com/agilebits/onepassword-app-extension/commits/master?after=04ca2a04e64fbb3ee26ed803edb6e5362d436856+769&branch=master). 4 years later Password Autofill was introduced in iOS 12 and it was a wonderful addition to iOS and superseded the share extension. As great as the share action was 7 years ago, it was well past time to retire it.
>
> Now I can definitely see how you could want us to continue postponing the share sheet’s retirement. We’ve postponed it for a few years already so why not another year or two? We could have done that but maintaining three different features that all serve the same purpose (Password AutoFill, share sheet, and now the new Safari web extension) is a big ask. Something had to give and since the share sheet offers the least functionality that isn’t covered by the other two it was time to bid it adieu.
>
> It would have been great to have more notice here and on desktop this would have been a lot easier as we have much more flexibility with upgrades. There we can prompt users if they’d like to upgrade and then install the new version when they’re ready. It’s really nice to have that flexibility and it helps a ton with communication as it allows us to not only highlight a change but also make sure its shown to the people who need to see it. I’d love to have this flexibility everywhere but unfortunately that’s not the world we live in.
>
> One of the places where we screwed up is we didn’t include this in the release notes for 7.8.0. That was an oversight and we updated the notes in 7.8.1, which was just published to the store last night.
>
> Now as for the new 1Password for Safari extension, it does indeed require a 1Password membership to use. There’s a plethora of reasons for that, both technical and business and support related, but at the end of the day we tried to make the transition easier by offering a license trade in. Simply [email us your license](mailto:support@1password.com?subject=Upgrading%20to%20a%201Password%20Membership) and **receive 50% off your first 3 years**. That’s for our pay-as-you-go (either monthly or yearly) approach.
>
> Some people would prefer to only pay when they explicitly authorize it and if this sounds like you please ask for the gift card option when you write in. We set up a special deal license holders can purchase a $99 gift card worth $150 of credit (only available on [1Password.com](http://1password.com/) , not .eu or .ca), allowing you to use 1Password for over 3 years. Once those 3+ years are up you can choose whether or not to pay again. No recurring or automatic payments will be taken and your data will always be available whether you renew or not.
>
> Before I sign off one thing I’d like to add is that it would have been much simpler for everyone had we been able to release 1Password 8 as a new SKU in the App Store with this change and all our other goodies that we have planned there. That would have brought me incredible joy and indeed this is exactly what we wanted to do. It’s too early to lift the curtain up too far but the hard reality is we needed to make adjustments to the schedule that resulted in 1Password 8 for iOS being pushed out to next year. When 1Password 8 comes out we will be going through the incredibly difficult process of releasing a new SKU and asking users to manually install the new release. We did this back in the day for 1Password 4 and while super painful for everyone involved, we will be doing it again for the exact same reasons as we did then: we don’t want to take away your existing features. It would have helped a lot if we had a new SKU this week but it just wasn’t something we were able to do in the timeline we found ourselves with. We had 72 working days from Apple announcing web extensions on iOS at WWDC in June to launch day and we needed all of them and frankly would have been thankful for more.
>
> This extension did everything we ever wanted to do in Safari on iOS (well, almost!) and Password Autofill handled the vast majority of features that the share action and was easier to use so we elected to retire the share action early in the development process.
>
> I know this isn’t the decision you wanted us to make but I hope this helps explain why we made the choices we did.

> After using LastPass for 10+ years I just switched to 1Password because it seems like the apps on both Windows and Android are much more polished and functional, the added security layer of a private secret key, and how engaged the company seems to be with the users on reddit…
