# Turns out founders on Reddit fix bugs and own their mistakes

Researched with Autumn (https://www.autumn.ai) from public sources. Updated 2026-11-07. Interactive version: https://www.autumn.ai/resources/founders-on-reddit

We read through 1,319 posts and comments from 55 founders' and early employees' Reddit accounts.

169 real Reddit replies from 55 founders and CEOs, from Valve to Stardew Valley: bugs fixed, mistakes owned, decisions explained.

## What we noticed

### Fixing it in the thread

Many of them read their own subreddit and fix the bug right where it was reported. 17 of these 55 accounts posted or commented in 2026.

- Eric Barone (u/ConcernedApe) in r/StardewValley: https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/1rbjzqj/finally_decided_to_marry_elliot_and_he/o6sw2ip/
- Marco Arment (u/marcoarment) in r/OvercastApp: https://www.reddit.com/r/OvercastApp/comments/1nepzbd/comment/ndtiz8h/

### Owning the mistake

The best replies skip the press-release voice: pricing that was wrong, a model taken away too soon, a promise made too early.

- Sam Altman (u/samaltman) in r/ChatGPT: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1mkae1l/gpt5_ama_with_openais_sam_altman_and_some_of_the/n7nelhh/

Replying to the post "Finally decided to marry Elliot and he immediately gives me the ick 😭".

> This is a mistake. He was supposed to say this if  you marry Leah
>
> When I'm doing dialogues like this I will often copy and paste an entry from another data sheet first, just to get the formatting right. Then I'll edit the actual data. In this case I must've copied the entry from Leah (she comments if you marry elliott), and then forgotten to change the part that was targeting Elliott

> It's his game. If it's not his fault then who? We haven't even gotten an update on the progress of the port since Dec of last year. It's now the middle of March. At this point the update had been out a year. It's clear his priorities are elsewhere since he's obviously working on…

> You're right, it is my game and I ultimately take full responsibility for the delay. I hate to make excuses but there were many things outside of my control that lead to this. I have not forgotten about the mobile update, in fact I think about it every day and it causes me a huge amount of grief. I want the update to come out more than anyone. It would be a huge relief to me if the update was ready and was released. I have been working on the new game because I don't have the skills or knowledge to be able to do a mobile port. I've never done any of the ports for stardew valley, I'm not a porting guy, I don't have any experience with that. So I've always relied on other people to do that. If I could throw more money at the problem to make it go faster, I would. Programming doesn't always work like that, especially with a game as nebulously coded as Stardew Valley, which only a few people on the planet have any familiarity with. I've said repeatedly that I would let everyone know if I had any more meaningful information about the update, and otherwise they should assume that It's still in progress. That is still the case, nothing has changed. It's not pleasant to keep tweeting "It's in progress" over and over, and read the responses. Sure, most people are understanding and supportive, but there's also people who are very angry, or even worse, saying things like "I've lost all faith in ConcernedApe", which does hurt because I've worked really hard for the past 10 years to build up goodwill with the community by providing as much support to players as I possibly could as one man. Including spending almost all my time for the past 6 years on free updates that I could've released as paid DLC. So it's really sad to see all that flushed down the toilet because of a delayed mobile update that is the result of factors largely outside of my control. It is demoralizing and part of why I don't get on twitter every week to tweet "It's still in progress, I'm sorry". I fully admit that I have not been as communicative as I should be, and that the delay for the mobile update is egregious and ridiculous. I admit that, and I understand if you are disgusted with me as a developer and don't ever give me another chance. I wish I could be more open about the reasons why the port has been delayed, but I don't think I am legally able to do that. So all I can do is accept the responsibility for this and do my best to bring the update as soon as possible. There's nothing else I can do at this point.

> How did the Humble Indie Bundles influence your decisions to port your games to Linux? What was the porting process like?

> Linux was like a party that sounded fun we were afraid to go to because we didn't think we'd know anybody there, and the HiB guys were like your socially fearless friend who says, "Don't worry, we'll go together." And when he gets to your house he says, "Is that what you're wearing?" and you say, "uh..." and he says, "Don't worry. I know a guy." And he lends you a cool leather jacket and you go to the party and when you walk in there's a needle scratch and everybody turns to look at you and your friend gives a cool nod and then everybody goes back to the party. So kind of like a John Hughes film. Hope that helps explain things. That's about as technical as I can go. I just hope I don't accidentally knock over a beer can pyramid that some tough guys are building.

> Hi. you have done a great job with Reddit. Reddit is unique and has raised a very outstanding community which can be never found in the internet. And I love it! What made you start a website like this? what was your inspiration? What do you think about the current Reddit…

> Thank you. But to be fair, this thing has grown far beyond what Steve and I started in that Medford apartment with. Sure, we can take credit for starting the planter box, tilling the soil, adding seeds, and watering, etc, but it's since grown into a freaking ecosystem.
>
> Hopefully that metaphor wasn't too strained and you catch my drift.

> Steve and I had applied to the first round Y Combinator with a different idea (Steve wanted to be able to order fastfood from his cellphone and pick it up when he walked in and I thought it could be a brilliant business). We were rejected from YC, but the next morning PG called my cell and offered us the chance to come back as long as we changed our idea.
>
> We jumped at the chance, took the next train back to Boston and met with him for about an hour. He pushed us to drop mobile (it was 05) and think about a web app that we'd personally want to use every day. We left that meeting with a phrase in our heads that PG crafted "front page of the internet." Then it was just up to me and Steve to make it.
>
> At the time, we were intrigued by delicious/popular, which was an interesting byproduct of their bookmarking service. Incidentally, we didn't learn about digg until weeks after we launched. It goes to show how much our ignorance helped, because you may remember all the blatant digg-clones that came and went before digg did -- Steve and I weren't trying to just copy, we were thinking about solving this problem from a clean slate.
>
> I need to get better at distinguishing between the many varied reddit communities. The culture & community on r/NBA is very different from the culture on r/aww and reddit is just the platform that enables such varied discourse. Steve and I always debated about subreddits vs tagging and I'm happy he won, because although it's taken longer to grow and develop, it's resulted in this marvelous variety in communities all using this common platform. So in a way, all of these varied communities are what we'd hoped for, but we've still got a ways to go until the reddit platform really is the ubiquitous way online communities share and discover content.

Replying to the post "CEOs of reddit, how did you get there?".

> I started Reddit with my college roommate of four years, Alexis Ohanian (u/kn0thing), immediately after graduation in 2005. Not having a big vision for the company, we more or less went with the flow, building whatever we felt like each day. As a result, when an opportunity to sell came along, we took it, selling to Condé Nast in 2006. We had little expectations for the company, so it seemed at the time like we were getting away with something.
>
> Alexis and I stayed with Reddit, under contract with CN, through 2009. I left because I wanted to try something else. I started Hipmunk in 2010 with another buddy, Adam Goldstein. He was the CEO and I was the CTO. I worked on Hipmunk for the next five years, learning many important lessons and unlearned many bad habits I had developed at Reddit. Meanwhile, Reddit continued to grow, eventually spinning out from Conde in 2012, and raising more money towards the end of 2014.

It's not that we're so bad at pricing, but rather that the software core doesn't make collaboration very easy yet, so we can't launch the plans we want. A flawed temporary workaround for this is to share a single login between multiple people's devices. ACLs also work in the Solo plan we we intend to continue allowing that.

> Hi Matt How did you get some of your first customers? Any strategies you can share?

> CloudFlare was born, in part, out of Project Honey Pot (http://www.projecthoneypot.org), an open source project that Lee (@icqheretic) and I started 10+ years ago. CloudFlare's first users were Project Honey Pot members. Our first email to them asked for a helluva leap of faith. Originally, the way you signed up for CloudFlare was by giving us your registrar's username/password. We wrote a little crawler that would login to your registrar, scrape all the DNS info, and then update your name servers. When we first emailed people we didn't have a UI beyond a little box that said something like: "Give us your GoDaddy username/password." It was pretty crazy that people did it, but we'd built a ton of trust with them over the years running PHPot without ever asking for anything in return.
>
> The other fun PHPot story was that when we were first starting we didn't have any money for equipment. Michelle (@zatlyn) suggested that we email all the PHPot users who lived around the Bay Area to see if they had any extra servers. So we did. Emailed about 100 people. Got a ton of replies. Michelle drove around in her little Jetta picking up all the servers. None of them worked, but we were able to take parts from them to cobble together 2 that kind of ran. It was on those two servers we built the first prototype of CloudFlare.

I have experimented with liquid nitrogen cooling in the past, but it is a huge pain to work with in any kind of daily use, and can also be dangerous. My new project is a very small super-powerful PC with no heatsinks and no fans - it is cooled by liquid propane, boiled into gaseous propane in an expansion block. From there, I can either compress back into a tank under high pressure, or vent out of a burner nozzle for supercooling to subzero temps. If I had more time, I would vent the propane to a small turbine generator hooked up to the PSU, but I can’t justify that kind of work right now.

Replying to the post "Nerd³ FW - Factorio".

> Hello, I'm the Factorio founder, and this is the answer to all of the people comparing Factorio with modded Minecraft. I would like to make clear, that I never ever tried to hide the fact, that Modded minecraft, mainly buildcraft/industrialcraft, was huge inspiration to create Factorio. In fact, before even the idea to create my own game came to my mind, I started to make my own (private) changes to these minecraft mods. I loved and enjoyed these mods A LOT and saw a big potential in the automation game, but I wanted to grab the subject and implement it my way. I wanted to be able to avoid the limitations of the Minecraft engine, so there can be huge factories with hundreds of thousands of items on transport belts while keeping smooth gameplay and without the need to think about activated/passive chunks. I wanted to have some other survival challenge than surviving the first night, that is somehow compatible with the industrialisation progress. I wanted to make it more about strategy, planning and timing than about a lot of hard work. I wanted it to have more variable logistics possibilities. I wanted to implement lot of good concepts from other games, as well as some of my own ideas. I wanted it to be all balanced and carved to work as a whole, because once the count of mods you use in minecraft (or any other game) starts to rise, the overall balance usually suffers a lot. Wasn't Minecraft created because Notch saw some concept in different game that he just wanted to do right? Factorio is the same thing I believe. I would also encourage anyone who plays Factorio (and has a lot of time to spare) to try the Minecraft industrial mods, so he can compare these two things and understand better what I'm trying to achieve.

> That’s right. Another way to think about this, and the way we talk about this internally, is that we prefer to communicate through our products. We are all pretty devoted to reading and listening to the community - everyone here believes it is an integral part of their job to do so. And when it comes time to respond, we generally use Steam - shipping updates that address issues or add functionality. Obviously this doesn't work for everything. Working this way imposes latency on our communication - it takes longer to ship and update than to do a blog post. This can lead to the feeling of an echo chamber, where it seems like Valve isn't listening. We’re always listening. So sometimes the latency is rough for everyone, including us when we want to address issues quickly. On balance we think it's usually worth the trade-off.

> I am not the CEO of a large company, I am the CEO of a rather small company, but maybe this answer will be helpful:
>
> There is no "typical" week, as my job is a non-specialized function. Thus, I typically spend my time working on X (see below), plus facilitate decisions on whatever critical issue has been escalated to my level. I say "facilitate" instead of "make" because sometimes I'm not the best person to *make* a decision, but instead I push people to sharpen their thinking, confront ambiguity, etc, in order to render a decision, especially on tough issues.
>
> X is defined as an always-varying combination of 1) things in my key areas of personal strength, 2) areas where, especially in a small company, we have not yet hired key people to lead that area but which still need to be done, and 3) areas where quality of execution is not sufficiently developed to achieve key strategic aims.
>
> In #2 and #3, potentially *none* of those areas may lie in my own areas of personal strength. As such, one other key activity for a CEO is to recruit the right people to the company who have the expertise to lead work in those areas better than he/she can.
>
> ----
>
> Ever since taking this job, I've discovered several things that I think result in CEOs being paid a lot more than other corporate officers. It's been an interesting journey.
>
> **1) The CEO is responsible for *everything*.** In a regular job, there are always problems that come up that you don't necessarily need to be responsible for - it's your co-worker's area, or you can kick it up to your boss, it belongs to another department, etc. Even if you are an VP or other executive, a problem may come up that is just in some other exec's department (e.g. if you are VP of Marketing and a tech problem comes up, it's the VP of Eng's issue, and vice versa). If you are the CEO, there is no other such person. *Every* problem is your problem. Yes, you can delegate, but you are responsible for the person handling it correctly. 100% of problems at the company are your problem. This is true for no one else.
>
> **2) You are the public face of your company, no matter how much you don't care to be.** When you think about a company, good or bad, you think of the CEO as the ultimate authority on everything. You probably don't know the VP of Corporate Communications at Microsoft, or the CFO of Tesla, but I'll bet you know the CEO's names. The CEO becomes *personally synonymous* with the company, especially when someone has a complaint.
>
> **2a) In a failure, you *must* be willing to be the sacrificial lamb to the public.** This is something that comes with the job, and is not a job requirement for any other executive position. Sometimes other executives take a fall publicly when something goes wrong, but it is usually because of something egregious directly going wrong in their organization. On the other hand, there are multiple macroeconomic or external disaster scenarios which can affect a company negatively and if the CEO is nothing less than brilliant in overcoming them (not always possible), it's part of the CEO's job to resign or be fired, and usually shamed publicly. This is known and accepted as part of the job. If you've had any other job, this was probably not part of your job description. :)
>
> **3) The job doesn't end. In many jobs, the job can end when you go home or on vacation.** Even in other crisis-response-type positions (ER, police, fire, datacenter ops), you have on-shift rotations and downtime. Not so for a CEO. Whatever key strategic initiative, ongoing crisis of the moment, or existential threat to the company will always be on your mind, and you are always subject to having a high-priority issue escalated to you. This is related to #1, i.e. you are responsible for *everything,* in that if there is something that truly requires your attention, no one will say "Wait, he/she's off-duty, don't bother them." You are always on duty; your downtime is when you leave the job.
>
> **4) You actually have *less* power over your environment than you have in any other job.** This is a counter-intuitive thing that people often don't realize about positions of authority. The degree of control you feel you have over your life is a ratio between the size of the sphere of things you can directly control ("Sphere of Influence") compared to the size of the sphere of things whose effects you need to worry about ("Sphere of Concern"). When you have a front-line, entry-level job, you may feel that you have little power, but the *ratio* of power-to-concern is quite high: you can affect how you are doing your job, and things you can't control include your boss, certain things about your work environment, and customers you come into contact with. If you become a manager, you control the entire team (but not really - people may defy you if you are not convincing enough), but now you have to be concerned with things that happen in other teams, elsewhere in the company, and an even larger demographic of customers. As a CEO, you have authority over the entire company (though again not true control over every individual's free actions), but you need to be worried about all the users and customers, competitors, large-scale industry trends, macroeconomic forces, regulators and governments, the press, etc. Thus, being a CEO requires developing extreme mental equanimity in the face of feeling nearly totally powerless - and still being able to make effective decisions using the limited resources you *can* control.
>
> ----
>
> These are the things I've noticed that separate the job from other high-level executive jobs. Certainly there are other factors (mentioned in other comments here), like being good at building relationships with key outside parties, having a lot of industry contacts, and being great at decision-making, but those are true of many executive-level positions. Thus, I believe that the salary differential arises largely from the fact that:
>
> * the CEO role involves a qualitatively higher level of life stress and personal risk-tolerance,
> * subsequently far fewer people are willing to take on such a role, and
> * the pool of such people intersected with people who are actually good at doing the job is therefore incredibly small,
> * intersected further on a per-industry basis (Alan Mulally from Ford could not have been a CEO for Microsoft).
>
> This leads to an acute supply-and-demand problem, i.e. the "I'm not getting paid enough to deal with this shit" issue, wherein plenty of otherwise talented executives who would be CEO candidates are happy to just stick with not taking that extra step - keep in mind that anyone with the combination of characteristics necessary to be a successful CEO has *lots* of options - so you end up with a highly illiquid market of candidates, and thus boards and compensation committees have to come up with really unique compensation packages to induce those people to take the job.
>
> **TL;DR:** excessive CEO pay is the result of the combination of the job having extreme unique requirements *and* its effects on supply-and-demand.
>

>
> Q: How much do you get paid?

> I wish I had won that last lottery. I'd buy reddit and keep it going as is. But I don't want ads, just because with ad-supported media the user becomes the product and not the customer. How many reddit golds would it take to support the site. At $7 million a year, about 234k…

> Hi. I am the CEO and I also sit on the board. I will make that promise right now: we will not sell reddit.
>
> I'm a long-time user, and I saw what happened to digg. I'm also someone who worked for a startup that was sold to a big company, and experienced how awful that was, both for life at the small company and what happened to the product (PayPal).
>
> Further, reddit was already *extremely lucky* to have been bought once in its lifetime by a large company that somehow, miraculously, didn't fuck it up. That is exceedingly rare in the corporate world. Now reddit has been spun off because Advance feels that by transitioning from whole owner to partial investor, it can allow an independent reddit to grow into something really great in the long-term, and they just want to own a chunk of that. So, having been lucky once, I'm not about to try my luck, our luck, the community's luck - again with another acquisition. So this is make or break - reddit has to find a way to be profitable and stand on its own. If we do, reddit will never need to sell, and it will be driven by the needs of its users.
>
> That said, we don't want people to buy reddit gold out of guilt. It's really nice that people did (I did, when it was launched) but we want to make gold better and better by adding features over time so that people will want to buy it out of self-interest. Guilt isn't a business model.
>
> **Point of interest:** we recently did launch a small persistent ad for reddit gold on the front page. It only shows up if you don't have reddit gold - log out and see. Look on the right sidebar, underneath the 300x250. It's supposed to be small and classy - we call it the goldvertisement. *After* you buy gold, if you don't disable ads, the ad turns into a little daily affirmation, and say something like "Who's awesome? / You're awesome" or "reddit is made of people / people like you."
>
> Not only that, but we are *also* doing the contest thing: it's a little hard to tell that it's going on, but /u/powerlanguage is running biweekly contests in /r/lounge. There's [one going on right now](http://www.reddit.com/r/lounge/comments/14h1iy/gold_peddler_competition/) to come up with more humorous messages to display in the goldvertisement box. > Actually the reason for the auto-added server on new network is to prevent a chicken-and-egg problem: after you install just one node, how do you know it's workng? If you install two nodes and they can't talk to each other, how do you know which one (or both) is broken?
>
> hello.ipn.dev helps with those questions, even if it's just a pingable server. But ping is hard to do on iOS or Android, and even on other OSes it requires people to drop to the command line, which can be tough, so we added an https server you can visit from a browser. And then we had to make the https server respond with something, so we added a (go-based) irc server kind of as a joke. (You can also connect using a regular irc client, which is another important test: most BeyondCorp-style products cannot proxy non-http traffic like irc.) More on testing with hello.ipn.dev here: https://tailscale.com/kb/1030/next-steps
>
> The irc server seems to have gotten misconstrued as a tech support mechanism lately, which isn't ideal (since we're a small team and can't monitor it full time), so we'll probably aim to shut it down and redirect people to freenode. But on the other hand, some users like it so we're hesitant to shut it down.
>
> Anyway, other commenters are correct that it's ACLed to not allow outgoing connections; it makes a good demo of a "one way" node. Nevertheless, users who are concerned about keeping their network private should remove the test node from their network, as described here: https://tailscale.com/kb/1073/hello-ipn-dev

> One thing we're proud of in the tailscale architecture is even if our public web site and login servers have outages, your network itself should keep being able to communicate, because the data is exchanged point-to-point. > Yeah, I'm particularly excited about StrictMode. (but I'm also the author of it :))
>
> StrictMode (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/StrictMode.html) is not about *unnecessarily* using network or CPU but about doing it on the *correct thread* (and it's about network or disk, not CPU)
>
> To run a 60 fps animation, you only have 16 ms in your main thread (UI thread) callbacks before you stutter an animation. Or 5000 ms to bring up an ANR dialog. Anything between 16 ms and 5000 ms is "janky", though (unresponsive, not pleasant).
>
> Given that the disk (and especially the network) can take longer than 16 ms, StrictMode helps you find places where you unknowingly use one of them. It's often the case that you didn't hit the disk directly, but some API you used hit the disk via IPC calls across 2 or more processes. And that process might have to wait for the system-wide yaffs lock (on devices that use yaffs) before it could even start the read/write. And it it's a write, the flash chip (whether MTD or a FTL emulating a block device) may have to do some slow GC, making some writes slower than others.
>
> In any case, you should get off the UI thread if there's any risk you might take longer than 16 ms.
>
> Gingerbread has hundreds of such fixes using data we've collected from internal dogfooding. We setup our dev builds to write all disk/network violations to the DropBox (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/DropBoxManager.html) and setup our dev builds' DropBox to upload them to servers to run mapreduces over. Every hour we'd have a new dashboard of the top offenders (count, total latency jank, etc), fixing as many as possible both in apps and in the system (various core services, providers, etc).
>
> I saw the transition slowly, but friends who have switched right from Froyo (which was already pretty fast!) to Gingerbread tell me that it's noticeably smoother & more responsive across the board. A large part of that is also the concurrent Garbage Collector in Dalvik.

> In that particular this article tries to teach our folks about standalone vaults and our approach for helping them. It then has a set of sample emails and responses, and sample responses to responses. As you might imagine in the case of people having troubles syncing their standalone vaults our recommendation is to move over to a membership where everything is taken care of for them.
>
> Certainly a controversial path for some but for the most part people just want their app to work and have their data everywhere they go and are happy to make the transition.
>
> Now to your point not everybody will be happy there and can what do we do then? We could certainly say “don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out” but we don’t. Instead we try our best to listen and see if we can find ways to help users. To see if we can build a connection or some common ground that will give us a safe place to build a relationship before proceeding to tackle the contentious issue that has them upset.
>
> At the end of the day people love 1Password and they react vehemently when they worry we might break their workflows or go in a direction they don’t like. With all the passion things can be said that are hurtful or rude as you say, and it’s human nature to want to fight fire with fire, but we’re professionals and in the fire fighting business professionals use water. Part of the long-form emoji-laden responses are an attempt to find a way to around the fire, build a connection, and add some humanity to the situation.
>

Replying to a redditor:

> Why did you abandon the share sheet? You have completely alienated all of your standalone vault users without any prior warning and with having previously stated that, while moving forward you would not support them, you would allow users to continue using them in the older…

> I'm sorry we pissed you off, Nixon506E. It certainly wasn't our intent. 💙
>
> In all honesty I haven't used the share sheet in years and the same can be said for most of our team. The share sheet was cutting edge technology when Apple introduced it in iOS 8 and at the time it was the only way we had to fill in Safari and other webviews. But it was limited in what it could do and when Apple introduced Password Autofill in iOS 12 we jumped on it and never looked back.
>
> Before going on I’d like to highlight exactly what functionality is available and what is no longer available for standalone vault users specifically.
>
> With [Password Autofill](https://support.1password.com/ios-autofill/) you can fill usernames & passwords for logins, including having the current TOTP value copied to your clipboard for extra convenience on sites with 2FA enabled. You can also save and create logins within 1Password.
>
> Password Autofill is super convenient as iOS highlights it right above the keyboard for easy discovery and activation. Now as good as Password Autofill is there were a few things that the API didn’t empower us to do, namely:
>
> * Fill sign-in forms with more than 2 fields
> * Fill credit cards
> * Fill addresses from identities
>
> Overall it was a great trade and we could have retired the share action when Password Autofill came available in iOS 12 but it wasn’t hurting anything and wasn’t in the way so we left it.
>
> We did however stop maintaining it as it was becoming quite long in the tooth. Custom share actions were added by Apple way back in 2014 and support for the action extension was introduced in iOS 8. The first commit to our open sourced [app extension repo](https://github.com/AgileBits/onepassword-app-extension) was on [July 20th, 2014](https://github.com/agilebits/onepassword-app-extension/commits/master?after=04ca2a04e64fbb3ee26ed803edb6e5362d436856+769&branch=master). 4 years later Password Autofill was introduced in iOS 12 and it was a wonderful addition to iOS and superseded the share extension. As great as the share action was 7 years ago, it was well past time to retire it.
>
> Now I can definitely see how you could want us to continue postponing the share sheet’s retirement. We’ve postponed it for a few years already so why not another year or two? We could have done that but maintaining three different features that all serve the same purpose (Password AutoFill, share sheet, and now the new Safari web extension) is a big ask. Something had to give and since the share sheet offers the least functionality that isn’t covered by the other two it was time to bid it adieu.
>
> It would have been great to have more notice here and on desktop this would have been a lot easier as we have much more flexibility with upgrades. There we can prompt users if they’d like to upgrade and then install the new version when they’re ready. It’s really nice to have that flexibility and it helps a ton with communication as it allows us to not only highlight a change but also make sure its shown to the people who need to see it. I’d love to have this flexibility everywhere but unfortunately that’s not the world we live in.
>
> One of the places where we screwed up is we didn’t include this in the release notes for 7.8.0. That was an oversight and we updated the notes in 7.8.1, which was just published to the store last night.
>
> Now as for the new 1Password for Safari extension, it does indeed require a 1Password membership to use. There’s a plethora of reasons for that, both technical and business and support related, but at the end of the day we tried to make the transition easier by offering a license trade in. Simply [email us your license](mailto:support@1password.com?subject=Upgrading%20to%20a%201Password%20Membership) and **receive 50% off your first 3 years**. That’s for our pay-as-you-go (either monthly or yearly) approach.
>
> Some people would prefer to only pay when they explicitly authorize it and if this sounds like you please ask for the gift card option when you write in. We set up a special deal license holders can purchase a $99 gift card worth $150 of credit (only available on [1Password.com](http://1password.com/) , not .eu or .ca), allowing you to use 1Password for over 3 years. Once those 3+ years are up you can choose whether or not to pay again. No recurring or automatic payments will be taken and your data will always be available whether you renew or not.
>
> Before I sign off one thing I’d like to add is that it would have been much simpler for everyone had we been able to release 1Password 8 as a new SKU in the App Store with this change and all our other goodies that we have planned there. That would have brought me incredible joy and indeed this is exactly what we wanted to do. It’s too early to lift the curtain up too far but the hard reality is we needed to make adjustments to the schedule that resulted in 1Password 8 for iOS being pushed out to next year. When 1Password 8 comes out we will be going through the incredibly difficult process of releasing a new SKU and asking users to manually install the new release. We did this back in the day for 1Password 4 and while super painful for everyone involved, we will be doing it again for the exact same reasons as we did then: we don’t want to take away your existing features. It would have helped a lot if we had a new SKU this week but it just wasn’t something we were able to do in the timeline we found ourselves with. We had 72 working days from Apple announcing web extensions on iOS at WWDC in June to launch day and we needed all of them and frankly would have been thankful for more.
>
> This extension did everything we ever wanted to do in Safari on iOS (well, almost!) and Password Autofill handled the vast majority of features that the share action and was easier to use so we elected to retire the share action early in the development process.
>
> I know this isn’t the decision you wanted us to make but I hope this helps explain why we made the choices we did.

It eventually turned into a software business, raised VC, and then went sideways (as 95% of VC-backed companies do). When I left in 2018, I started another company (also in B2B marketing SaaS world) called SparkToro. It uses an LLC model very similar to the one I posted above. That's been a far more joyful and positive experience; we've kept the team small, and the business profitable.
>
> Then, in 2020, during Covid lockdowns, I got obsessed with the indie video game world, and decided to start down this path. More details in the blog post, but long story short is I/we spent the first 3 years making a lot of mistakes before eventually forming a 5-person studio and making significant progress the past year. I still run and work mostly full-time on SparkToro, but my 4 cofounders at Snackbar are full-time on that business. My job is mostly setting the big picture direction, getting us funding, and making sure all the operations stuff runs smoothly so everyone else can concentrate on their day-to-day work.

> hi, yes, i hear you, this was bad communication, and i own up to that. The team owns up to that, too. Before getting into more specifics, i just want to make it clear that this is our top priority -- fixing this product feedback and communication loop with the community. I’ve mentioned this before but our new cpo is starting in a month, and this is going to be his top priority, too
>
> the “patrons pay the fees” rollout (which was a terrible) was the worst product rollout in the history of the company. One thing we learned from that is to not roll out products without doing a ton of patron and creator research -- both qualitative and quantitative. A change we made at that point was to give creators and patrons a heads up months in advance of any changes, including giving folks visibility into problems that we’re solving and options for solutions that we’re exploring. The blog post that went out yesterday was one of those communications -- the intention was to let folks know that we are currently working on the billing problem and exploring ways to fix the associated problems. But it wasn’t the right communication -- it was written as if it was final, it didn’t properly explain that we’re in the research phase, and it framed the work as a solution rather than letting folks know we’re exploring a bunch of options for how to solve this. Not ok -- we have to do better than that.
>
> ive already posted more specifically about what we’re going to do to get better at communication, but i’ll copy paste it here for reference:

> How can artists develop discipline instead of relying on motivation? Huge fan of your work Jack!

> oh, i freaking LOVE this question. I think about this a lot. i have a few suggestions.
>
> 1) when you're feeling inspired, don't quit till it's finished. when paul mccartney started feeling inspired and writing a song, he made a rule that he WOULDN'T STAND UP from the piano until he had a FINISHED draft. Verse, chorus, intro, outro, lyrics, bridge, EVERYTHING. it was a rule. so after a year or so, he had a bunch of FINISHED songs, instead of scraps of dismembered verses, or a chorus here or there. This is such a great rule. i love it.
>
> 2) work to publish. this is a mentality that i've adopted in the last few years -- it's a scrappiness of work style and a biased toward action when it comes to work habits. i work with the intention of \*publishing.\* what do i need to do in order to get this published? not necessarily "finished" because i don't feel like i can ever "FINISH" a piece of art. but what do i have to do to get it published? in other words, how much more until i can upload it?! thinking of it that way, instead of trying to FINISH it, has really helped me write the next sentence, paint the next stroke, design the next slide, build the next synth, record the next drum track, etc. instead of spending a day deciding whether it should be blue or teal, i try to figure out what i need to do in order to publish. this has helped me work more efficiently and increase my volume of output -- which strangely, and counter intuitively, has also increased the QUALITY of my work, because my feedback cycles are faster, and i learn faster about what resonates with my audience and what doesn't. work to publish -- that's been the best mentality shift for me.
>
> 3) i separate my creative work into TWO buckets: 1) stuff to do when I'm inspired, and 2) grunt to do when i'm not inspired. While I'm working, I keep a list of all the things that are bugging me that are essentially grunt work. "Slide 10 is poorly designed and needs a revamp" or "the kick drum isn't popping out enough" or "the mix of the vocal track isn't cutting through enough." These are not creative tasks as much as they are technical TODOs. And when I'm uninspired, I CRANK THROUGH THAT SHIT. It keeps me super productive, even when i'm not feeling CREATIVE and inspired. Does that make sense? then invariably, what happens is that while i'm working on some technical task, my mind gets bored and starts inventing things, like a melody or lyric or new type of sound design, or a creative way of communicating a feeling. Then, INSTANTLY, when i feel inspired, i switch from plowing through technical TODOS and shift gears into creative imagination-based work. that way, i stay productive the whole time, even when i'm not feeling "inspired." all you gotta do is separate your work into two buckets.
>
> 4) find your inspiration system. i've found that there are some things that i can consume that just LIGHT me up. like, for example, when i listen to the band The Battles, my brain starts firing a million miles per minute, and i get hyper creative. recently, i've been reading a book by jack welch, the famous former GE CEO. when i read that book, i feel INSPIRED to be a better leader and a positive manager. so what's your system? what's the piece of art, writing, podcast, whatever that you can consumer that gets your juices flowing? find it, and book time to consume it right before you start your creative work time. it works wonders!

> Good question! Currently reading "How Big Things Get Done" by Bent Flyvbjerg which includes the amazing stat that historically just 0.5% of megaprojects have been delivered on time/quality/budget which is totally insane.

> With our cost calculations we produced high and low scenarios and the numbers we shared are the average of those scenarios, based on the performance we've achieved today. As shared during the press conf last week, the key way we're working on robustly getting the cost to the lower end of the range is by adding 'hotspot hunting' to the operation. Doing so should get us to the \~4B mark.
>
> The nice thing about the cleanup operation is that it's modular. It's just copy-pasting the current system. The cost projections are an extrapolation of operating 1 system. Historically, doing one-off projects are the ones sensitive to cost overruns (e.g. nuclear power plants) while modular activities see the opposite: a learning curve.
