Oaz Nir
Oaz Nir is a mathematician and quantitative-trading technologist. He represented the United States at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2000 (gold medal) and 2001 (silver medal), then earned a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.A. in English from Duke University (2005) and a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Health Sciences and Technology from MIT/Harvard (2009) under advisor Bonnie Berger, supported by a DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (2006-2009, Computational Biology). His doctoral research applied computational modeling to high-throughput cell-image data (Genome Research, 2010). He joined the quantitative trading firm Hudson River Trading in 2009 as an Algorithm Developer, became a Partner in 2017 responsible for developing trading algorithms, and left the firm in January 2025.
- Quant employment verification: CONFIRMED. Oaz Nir held real long-term employment at Hudson River Trading (HRT), a multi-asset-class quantitative/high-frequency trading firm. DOE CSGF alumni profile lists his current status as 'Algorithmic Trading, Hudson River Trading' with research area 'Computational Finance'; HRT's own partner roundtable identifies him as a partner responsible for developing the trading algorithms; efinancialcareers reports he left HRT in January 2025 per his FINRA registration. HRT is an actual quant trading firm, so this is a genuine quantitative-finance role, not a name coincidence.Jan 1, 2009
- Spent ~15 years at Hudson River Trading: joined 2009 as an Algorithm Developer (2009-2016), became Partner in 2017 (2017-2024). HRT said he announced his step-down as partner in mid-2024; his FINRA registration shows he officially left in January 2025.Apr 16, 2025
- Treated as industry gossip, not fact: a Reddit r/quant thread and efinancialcareers both note that his January 2025 exit from HRT was quiet and unannounced; HRT's statement said he announced the step-down in mid-2024 and wished him 'well in his retirement', with no public successor role disclosed. No confirmed next employer found as of 2026-09.Dec 1, 2025
- Earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Health Sciences and Technology from MIT/Harvard in 2009, supported by a DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (2006-2009) under advisor Bonnie Berger, field of study Computational Biology.Jan 1, 2009
- First author of 'Inference of RhoGAP/GTPase regulation using single-cell morphological data from a combinatorial RNAi screen' (Genome Research, 2010, with Chris Bakal, Norbert Perrimon, Bonnie Berger), the core output of his MIT Ph.D. work applying computational modeling to high-dimensional cell-image data.Feb 9, 2010
- Competed for the United States at the International Mathematical Olympiad in both 2000 and 2001: gold medal in 2000 (36 points, 92.4%) and silver medal in 2001 (65 points, 86.5%).Jul 1, 2001
- HRT named him one of three active partners (with Jason Carroll on trading technology and Prashant Lal on new markets), with Nir responsible for developing the trading algorithms.May 12, 2021
- HRT was founded in 2002 by Jason Carroll, Alex Morcos and Suhas Daftuar; a 2021 profile lists three active partners - Carroll, Nir and Lal - so Nir became a named partner of a firm he joined in 2009.May 12, 2021
