Astrid Mirle
Astrid Mirle is an East German mathematician. As a school pupil in Riesa she represented the German Democratic Republic (DDR) at the 31st International Mathematical Olympiad in Beijing in 1990, winning a bronze medal (rank 80, 22/42 points; the GDR team placed 7th). She went on to study mathematics at TU Dresden, where she was supervised by Doz. Dr. Volker Reitmann and won the university's Georg Helm Prize in 1997 for her Diplom thesis 'Abschaetzung der Hausdorff-Dimension invarianter Mengen' (estimation of the Hausdorff dimension of invariant sets). She received her doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) at TU Dresden in 1998, and subsequently worked on fractals and random walks in the physics department of TU Chemnitz (SFB 393) before joining Philips Research in Hamburg, where she became a research scientist in medical image registration and analysis. She published under both 'Astrid Mirle' and, after marriage, 'Astrid Franz'.
