Portuguese mathematician at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, in the Applied Mathematics and Computation programme (LMAC). Represented Portugal at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2016 in Hong Kong, earning an honourable mention (14 points), and won a gold medal at the Ibero-American Physics Olympiad (OIbF) in 2017. As an IST student he was a Novos Talentos em Matemática research fellow, worked in the CAMGSD centre (supervised by Pedro Resende), and wrote a Master's thesis on Maslov indices and filtered Floer homology. Awarded IST's Professor Jaime Campos Ferreira Prize in 2021 and named an Excellent Teacher (Docentes Excelentes 2021/2022) for Matemática Experimental.

Duarte Luís Maia Nascimento (IST id ist189623) studies and researches mathematics at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. He competed for Portugal at the IMO 2016 (Hong Kong), scoring 14 points and receiving an honourable mention, and earlier won gold for Escola Secundária da Amadora at the Portuguese/Ibero-American Physics Olympiad (2017). Within IST he has been a Novos Talentos em Matemática fellow (2018-19), an undergraduate and MSc researcher at CAMGSD under Pedro Resende, and authored an MSc thesis on computing Maslov indices in two dimensions and filtered Floer homology. He received the Professor Jaime Campos Ferreira Prize (2021) and was recognised as an Excellent Teacher for 2021/2022 in Matemática Experimental.

Notes
  • CAMGSD (IST) annual reports list him as an undergraduate (2020-21) then MSc (2021-22) researcher supervised by Pedro Resende, with an MSc thesis on computing Maslov indices and filtered Floer homology of Hamiltonians on the torus - placing him in symplectic topology.2022
  • Represented Portugal at IMO 2016 (Hong Kong): 14 points, rank 312, honourable mention; Portugal placed 47th overall.Jul 2016
  • Named an Excellent Teacher for 2021/2022 at IST for the Matemática Experimental (LMAC) course, meaning he taught while studying - a doctoral/advanced-student teaching role.2022
  • Received the Professor Jaime Campos Ferreira Prize (IST Dept. of Mathematics) in 2021, a merit award for outstanding mathematics students.2021
  • Won gold at the Ibero-American Physics Olympiad (XXII OIbF, 2017) while still at Escola Secundária da Amadora, so his talent spanned both mathematics and physics before settling into mathematics at IST.2017
  • Was a Novos Talentos em Matemática research fellow at IST in 2018-2019, presenting work ('SAT com Multigrafos') at the programme's workshop.2019
  • IMO 2016 team-mate Henrique Navas and he later studied LMAC together at IST ('LMAConquISTadora' univ. programming marathon team with João Tavares, 2017), showing an olympiad cohort that stayed in mathematics.2017
  • IST scholar profile (ist189623) shows a single indexed entry (the MSc thesis), consistent with an early-career researcher rather than an established author.Sep 2026
