Elon Lindenstrauss

Israeli mathematician; 2010 Fields Medalist in ergodic theory and dynamical systems

Elon Lindenstrauss (born August 1, 1970, Jerusalem) is an Israeli mathematician and winner of the 2010 Fields Medal, awarded for his work in ergodic theory and dynamical systems, especially measure rigidity for actions of higher-rank diagonalizable groups. He represented Israel at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1988 as a schoolboy, earned BSc, MSc and PhD degrees at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (PhD 1999 under Benjamin Weiss), and has held posts at Stanford, NYU's Courant Institute, Princeton University, and the Hebrew University, where he was the Alice Kusiel and Kurt Vorreuter University Chair and chaired the Einstein Institute of Mathematics (2016-2018). In 2024 he joined the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton as permanent faculty in the School of Mathematics. His honors also include the Fermat Prize, Erdos Prize, EMS Prize, Salem Prize and Blumenthal Award, and he is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Academia Europaea.

Fields Medalist (2010) working at the intersection of ergodic theory, dynamical systems and number theory; known for measure-rigidity theorems and for joint work (with Manfred Einsiedler and Akshay Venkatesh) in homogeneous dynamics, including the resolution of the arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity conjecture in some settings.
