José Ramón Madrid Padilla is a Honduran mathematician and Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in the Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech, working in harmonic analysis and its connections to number theory, combinatorics, ergodic theory and PDE. He rose from the Honduran public school system to win Honduras's first-ever IMO medal (bronze, 2009; silver, 2010), then earned a PhD at IMPA in Brazil, held postdocs at Aalto and ICTP, and was a Hedrick Assistant Adjunct Professor at UCLA mentored by Terence Tao before joining Virginia Tech in 2023. He received the inaugural AMS Stefan Bergman Fellowship (2024-25) and the 2023 Mahony-Neumann-Room Prize.

Born 17 April 1993 in Honduras and raised in the rural regions of Olancho and Santa Barbara, José Ramón Madrid Padilla attended the Honduran public school system, where he and his siblings discovered the Honduran Mathematical Olympiads. He represented Honduras at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2009 (bronze, the country's first medal) and 2010 (silver). The 2009 result led to a summer program at IMPA in Brazil that became six years there: a bachelor's at UFRJ and master's and PhD in Mathematics at IMPA under Emanuel Carneiro (2016). He then held postdoctoral positions at Aalto University (Finland, 2016-17) and ICTP (Italy, 2017-18), was a Hedrick Assistant Adjunct Professor at UCLA (2018-22) mentored by Terence Tao, and spent 2022-23 at the University of Geneva before becoming Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech in August 2023. His research focuses on harmonic analysis and related areas including maximal operators, discrete harmonic analysis, decoupling inequalities, additive combinatorics and the Collatz conjecture.
