Marica Knežević
Marica Knezevic is a Montenegrin mathematician and quantitative-finance professional. Born and schooled in Niksic, she was Montenegro's standout young mathematician, competing at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2007 and 2008 (honourable mention, 12 points, 2008). She took a mathematics bachelor's at the University of Novi Sad, a master's at the University of Cambridge (9.58 average), and a PhD in mathematics at King's College London funded by a Leverhulme Trust studentship. She then moved into industry, spending several years in quantitative analytics at Barclays Investment Bank (rising to Vice President), before becoming a business analyst and later Technical Business Analysis Lead at MUFG Investor Services in Cyprus.
- Earned an honourable mention at IMO 2008 with 12 points (rank 297), solving problem 1 fully (7 pts) and problem 4 partially (4 pts) - a strong performance for a small-country team.Jul 2008
- Moved from a mathematics PhD into quantitative finance: quantitative analyst roles at Barclays Investment Bank, rising to VP, before switching to business analysis at MUFG Investor Services - a shift from pure modelling to bridging tech and business in fintech.2024
- Completed a Cambridge master's in mathematics with a 9.58 average, then won UK scholarships from King's College London and the Leverhulme Trust for her PhD - an uncommon trajectory from a small Montenegrin town to UK elite mathematics.Oct 21, 2012
- Told the press in 2012 she wanted to return to Montenegro to pass on her knowledge - but by her LinkedIn record she instead built a career in UK quantitative finance and Cyprus fintech, a common olympiad-to-quant drift.Oct 21, 2012
- Also represented Montenegro at IMO 2007 (7 points), so 2008 was her second IMO and marked a clear jump in score - she was already the country's strongest maths talent.Jul 2007
- Attributed her start in mathematics to teacher Vuksan Bulatovic at Gimnazija 'Stojan Cerovic' in Niksic, who recognised her talent and drew her into the maths section - the origin of an olympiad and later academic career.Oct 21, 2012
- The PhD-period trace that survives online is thin - no published thesis, papers or arXiv record surfaced - which suggests her post-PhD output lives in industry (IP/models) rather than open academic publishing.Sep 2026
