RWReid W. Barton
Reid William Barton (b. May 6, 1983, Arlington, MA) is an American mathematician and one of the most decorated competitors in the International Science Olympiads. He took part-time university courses from age 10 and worked with MIT's Charles E. Leiserson on the CilkChess program from eighth grade. He was the first person to win four IMO gold medals (1998-2001), with a perfect 42/42 in 2001, and is the only person to hold gold at both the IMO and the IOI. At MIT he was a four-time Putnam Fellow, won the 2004 Morgan Prize, and worked at Akamai with Ramesh Sitaraman on early video performance measurement. He earned a Harvard PhD in mathematics in 2019 under Michael J. Hopkins, held a postdoc at Pittsburgh/CMU, and now works on formalizing mathematics with the Lean proof assistant, serving as a mathlib maintainer and on the IMO Grand Challenge committee.
