Richard Leo Freeland
Richard Leo Freeland is a British pure mathematician. As a schoolboy at Winchester College he was selected for the UK team at the 51st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2010, Astana, Kazakhstan), competing as UNK4 and winning an Honourable Mention with 14 points. He stayed on the UK international squad, taking part in the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad 2010 and Romanian Masters of Mathematics 2010, and winning a Silver Medal at RMM 2011. He read and then did doctoral research in pure mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, submitting a PhD thesis in 2019 titled 'Relating Thompson's group V to graphs of groups and Hecke algebras'. While at Cambridge he co-organised the Junior Algebra Seminar (2018-9) with Stacey Law and helped organise the Postgraduate Group Theory Conference, and he has continued to contribute problems to British Mathematical Olympiad papers.
