On “Ask Arnold for Advice”

Hello Arnold! How would you, personally, prevent negative thoughts (there's always tomorrow, i can start again tomorrow etc) creeping in when starting and sticking to a gym routine?

Write down next to your bed where you see it, “Don’t think.” If you think, you are screwed. You have to get up like a machine and train. Your mind is your enemy. It will have a million reasons you should stay in bed or why you are better starting out on Monday. What is the difference between Monday and tomorrow? Your body has no idea what day you are training, so what the hell is your mind talking about? When your brain starts going in the morning, say it out loud to yourself: Don’t think. It is your mantra. And one day in a few months, you’ll start to feel weird if you don’t train. Then you’ve made it automatic and it is really routine. Congrats.

Thank you for sharing! This is a fantastic memory. Lucy called me at the gym after she saw me on the Merv Griffin show and asked me to be part of this because she thought I was funny. You have to understand what a huge opportunity this was. She was the queen of TV. She saved me at the beginning because I was a forehead and didn’t know “shoot live” meant there would be an audience. When I came out of that door and saw the crowd, I was a deer in headlights.

Lucy couldn’t have been more of a jewel. She gave me advice on Hollywood and continued to check in on me.

This is also a good reminder that the giant success you in the world see a lot of times was a longer road of smaller success than you think. This was really my screen debut because the company that made Hercules in New York went bankrupt and wasn’t able to release the film. And it was 10 years before Terminator came out! 8 years before Conan. Seeing something like this is just really fantastic because you can see how going on the Merv Griffin show built up to this, and then this built up to things like Stay Hungry… and eventually the blockbusters. This is why I’m always telling people to spend more time celebrating the small wins. You are building up to something.

On “18-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger serving as a tank driver in the Austrian Army's tank corps. During his army service he went AWOL so he could take part in the Junior Mr Europe competition, and spent a week in military prison after winning that in 1965.”

Nice memories probably. So u/govschwarzenegger learned early on how to drive a tank

u/GovSchwarzenegger replied

I did. Despite a few accidents, I was a pretty good tank driver! These photos are from a visit later on though, not during my time in the military.
