Laurenz Kohlbach

Laurenz Kohlbach competed for Austria at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in both 2017 and 2018, one of the country's strongest young mathematicians of his cohort. At IMO 2017 in Rio de Janeiro he scored 21 points and won a silver medal - a result matched by only Simon Breneis that year and one of the best Austrian placements since 2000. At IMO 2018 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania he scored 18 points and won bronze, ranking 228th of roughly 594 contestants. He was a pupil at Stiftsgymnasium St. Paul in Carinthia and trained for years in the Mathematical Olympiad course run by the Alpen-Adria-Universitaet Klagenfurt. He progressed through Austria's olympiad pipeline from the 2014 regional beginner competition to national first prize in 2018, also winning bronze at the Middle European Mathematical Olympiad (MEMO).
