IMO 1976 Bronze Medallist (19/40)Researcher At The Institute Of Mathematics, Hanoi, 1986-1995

IMO 1976 bronze medallist for Vietnam; career researcher in probability and statistics at the Institute of Mathematics, Hanoi (documented 1986-1995). Little public digital footprint beyond Vietnamese-language institutional and school records.

Lê Ngọc Chuyên is a Vietnamese mathematician who, as a school student from the mathematics special programme at Vinh University (Khối THPT Chuyên Đại học Vinh), represented Vietnam at the 18th International Mathematical Olympiad held in Linz, Austria, in July 1976, winning a bronze medal with 19 of 40 points. He later joined the research staff of the Institute of Mathematics of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in Hanoi, working in the Department of Probability and Statistics as a Phó Tiến sĩ (PTS, candidate of sciences) from at least 1986 through 1995.

Notes
  • Won bronze (19/40) at the 18th IMO, Linz 1976, on Vietnam's third-ever IMO team; the team's other medallist that year was Nguyen Thi Thieu Hoa (silver) from the Hanoi science special school.Jul 1976
  • Spent roughly a decade as a Phó Tiến sĩ (PTS/candidate of sciences) in the Institute of Mathematics' Probability and Statistics department (reports name him from 1992 through 1995, and a staff list dates the stint 1986-1995) — an academic research track, not the corporate path several later Vietnamese IMO medallists took.Dec 1995
  • Came through the mathematics special-class programme at Vinh University (Nghe An), one of Vietnam's regional math training centres; the school counts him among its first IMO medallists, showing the provincial special schools were already feeding the national team in the 1970s.1976
  • The trail thins after 1995: later Institute of Mathematics staff reports and the modern web carry no clear continued record, suggesting he either left the institute or retired into private life.1995
