Ognian Trifonov is a Bulgarian-American mathematician and Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina, working in analytic number theory and approximation theory. As a school student he represented Bulgaria at the International Mathematical Olympiad, taking bronze in 1977 and silver in 1978. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" in 1989 and has published on gaps between squarefree numbers, including joint work with Michael Filaseta.

- Co-authored a 2023 arXiv paper 'Representing positive integers as a sum of a squarefree number and a small prime' with Jack Dalton, showing he remained research-active in number theory four decades after his IMO years.2023
- His 1992 squarefree-numbers paper is dedicated to the memory of Vasil Popov - his Ph.D. advisor at Sofia University - confirming the advisor-student link from both ends.1992
- Co-authored 'On Gaps Between Squarefree Numbers II' with Michael Filaseta (J. London Math. Soc., 1992), continuing the squarefree-gap problem.1992
