Why are my easy runs so slow?

Hey everyone, Stats: • 30M • 2 years running, 2.5 months doing Norwegian Sub-threshold training (MSA) • LTHR: 173 bpm • Max HR: 190 bpm • 65 km/week (40 mi) → 2 easy, 3 sub-threshold, 1 long run • 5K PB: 18:45 (3:45/km | 6:02/mi) • 10K PB: 39:45 (3:58/km | 6:24/mi) •…

The effect of running the easy runs between 70-80% of max HR vs. below 70%, like I generally recommend (and still do), is a matter again of cost/benefit. The effect on muscle tone, running economy and recovery is sufficient at below 70%, but going above this, most will start having more muscular wear. That will influence recovery and the next harder session. MOST runners will be MOST of the time be in a negative muscular state in terms of recovery and tone after a harder session - even sub-threshold. So you really have to play the recovery days smart. Are there exceptions ? Yes, of course, but usually staying below 70 generally keeps it safe.

Ha, between running and treating runners I barely drink. Have one for me, James.

Thinking of adding 36-40x 45” on 15” off to the repertoire

Do you think the reps should be done at or around 5k pace or closer to 10k pace?

u/MariusBakken replied

That load is too much. For most, the top repeat number should be about 30 at threshold, 20-25 at faster paces. You also need to consider the aim beforehand - you can do it as a pure threshold session but…
