Hi, Mr. Abercrombie. To go with one of the classic questions; would you rather fight 100 three inch tall Bloody-Nines, or 1 nine feet tall George R R Martin?

u/Joe_Abercrombie replied

The real GRRM actually is slightly over nine feet tall, and I did fight him during the author wars of 1981. I was unhorsed in the lists but he was gracious in victory and allowed me to keep my writing hand.

The Definitive Scientific Guide to Eyebrow-Raising in Fantasy Fiction

You all know what I'm talking about. A character cocks an eyebrow, or raises a sardonic brow, or arches an eyebrow. People like to joke about this when it's overused and since I'm a big ole nerd I decided to quantify exactly how often it happens and which authors like this trait…

Just coming here to say you are an amazing writer: a recent reread of A Little Hatred made me notice how you stepped your game up once again. You really had to sneak in the overall theme of each character straight from their introductions, am I right? It's subtle, I hadn't…

Savine was written with an italicised internal monologue a la her father, but I cut it out after the first part, or maybe the second. While Glokta says to himself all the things he can't or won't say to others, the joy of Savine was always that she says to people's faces exactly what she thinks, on the whole. I found myself searching for things to do with it, which is a good indication it's not necessary. She was much more effective without it.
